Drainage In Nottinghamshire: What We Know
Housing across the county ranges from Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Nottingham, Mansfield and Worksop, where rear drains are often shared between neighbours, to former colliery villages in Ashfield and north Nottinghamshire and newer estates on the edges of towns such as Newark, Bingham and Hucknall. Each brings its own drainage problems, from root-damaged clay pipes to builders' debris in new plastic runs.
Flooding is a recurring theme. Nottinghamshire County Council has published Section 19 flood investigations for places including Arnold, Hucknall, Newark, Southwell, Worksop, Retford, Stapleford and Lowdham after Storm Babet in October 2023 and earlier storms. Clear private drains, gullies and soakaways won't stop a river flooding, but they do help surface water get away after heavy rain.
The ground varies too. Nottingham is built on free-draining Sherwood Sandstone, while the Mercia Mudstone clay seen in the red cliffs at Radcliffe-on-Trent drains slowly — which matters if you're planning a soakaway, and is why we recommend a percolation test first.

Who Owns The Drains In Nottinghamshire?
In England you're responsible for the drains that serve only your property and sit inside your boundary. Pipes you share with neighbours, lateral drains beyond your boundary and the sewers themselves have been the water company's responsibility since private sewers were transferred on 1 October 2011.
Severn Trent Water runs the public sewers across all of Nottinghamshire, including Bassetlaw. It is responsible for the sewers in the road and for any drain you share with a neighbour or that runs outside your boundary.
Water supply is Severn Trent too, except in most of Bassetlaw — including Retford — where Anglian Water supplies the water while Severn Trent still runs the sewers. Worksop, Carlton in Lindrick and Langold are Severn Trent for both.
Road gullies belong to Nottinghamshire County Council, or to Nottingham City Council inside the city boundary.
