Drainage In Leicestershire: What We Know
Severn Trent runs the sewers in almost all of Leicestershire. The big exception is Market Harborough, in the Welland catchment, where Anglian Water runs the sewers even though Severn Trent supplies the water — and Severn Trent's own maps suggest several nearby villages are the same, so check by postcode.
Leicester and much of the county sit on Mercia Mudstone, a clay that shrinks and swells and can attack concrete with sulphates, according to the British Geological Survey. It drains poorly, so soakaways need proper percolation testing, and older rigid pipes are prone to cracked and displaced joints.
Storm Henk in January 2024 and the floods of January 2025 set record river levels at gauges across the county, from the Soar at Loughborough to the Sence at South Wigston, according to Environment Agency data.

Who Owns The Drains In Leicestershire?
In England you're responsible for the drains that serve only your property and sit inside your boundary. Pipes you share with neighbours, lateral drains beyond your boundary and the sewers themselves have been the water company's responsibility since private sewers were transferred on 1 October 2011.
Severn Trent Water runs the public sewers across Leicester and almost all of Leicestershire.
Market Harborough is the main exception: its wastewater goes to Anglian Water's Market Harborough Water Recycling Centre, although Severn Trent supplies the water. Severn Trent's own boundary map also places villages such as Lubenham, Foxton, Husbands Bosworth and Kibworth Harcourt outside its sewer area — check by postcode.
Road gullies belong to Leicestershire County Council, or to Leicester City Council inside the city.

Leicestershire County Council looks after roadside drains outside the city (see its roadside drains page). Inside Leicester, report highway flooding and blocked gullies to Leicester City Council.
We cover the whole county. Syston, Loughborough and Melton Mowbray are about 40–45 minutes from Southwell, Leicester and Castle Donington about 55, and Hinckley and Market Harborough about 65–70 minutes. There's no call-out fee for any of them, but the further towns are best booked ahead.
Sometimes. Mercia Mudstone clay drains slowly, so a soakaway needs a percolation test first (the BRE 365 method) and may need to be larger than usual — or an alternative such as a connection to a surface-water sewer, with permission. We'll test before we recommend anything.
