What To Do Until Our Engineer Arrives
A few simple steps limit the damage and keep everyone safe. Never put yourself at risk to clear a drain.
Stop using water
Don’t flush, run taps, shower or use the washing machine or dishwasher — every litre adds to the overflow. Ask everyone in the house to do the same.
Keep clear of dirty water
Sewage carries harmful bacteria. Keep children and pets away, wear rubber gloves if you must touch anything, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
Leave heavy covers alone
Manhole covers are heavy, can crack and can trap fingers, and an open chamber is a fall hazard. Leave lifting to our engineers.
Skip the chemicals
Don’t pour drain unblocker, bleach or caustic soda into a blocked drain. It rarely works and can splash back when the drain is opened.
Stay safe around electrics
If water is near sockets or appliances, keep away. Only switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it from a dry place.
Check with neighbours and take photos
If next door has the same problem, it may be the public sewer. Photos of any damage will help if you make an insurance claim.
