Drainage In Derbyshire: What We Know

Derbyshire is unusual in having three sewerage companies. Severn Trent covers Derby and most of the county, but Yorkshire Water runs the sewers in the Rother and Don catchment — Chesterfield, Staveley, Bolsover and Dronfield — even where Severn Trent supplies the water, and Clay Cross is split between the two. United Utilities covers Glossop in the High Peak, which is outside our area.

Much of eastern Derbyshire is former coalfield, so before excavation or new drainage it's worth checking the address on the government's coal mining checker. Derby itself sits largely on Mercia Mudstone, a clay that drains slowly and moves with the seasons — hard on older rigid clay pipes and a poor bet for soakaways without testing.

Derbyshire County Council says around 1,600 properties in the county flooded during Storm Babet in October 2023, with Chesterfield, Long Eaton, Sandiacre, Ilkeston and Langley Mill among the places hit.

Who Owns The Drains In Derbyshire?

In England you're responsible for the drains that serve only your property and sit inside your boundary. Pipes you share with neighbours, lateral drains beyond your boundary and the sewers themselves have been the water company's responsibility since private sewers were transferred on 1 October 2011.

Severn Trent Water runs the public sewers in Derby, Erewash, Amber Valley, South Derbyshire and the Derbyshire Dales.

Yorkshire Water runs the sewers in Chesterfield, Staveley, Bolsover and Dronfield (the Rother and Don catchment), even though Severn Trent supplies drinking water to much of that area. Clay Cross sits on the watershed and is split between the two, street by street.

Swadlincote's drinking water comes from South Staffs Water, but its sewers are Severn Trent's. Glossop (United Utilities) is outside our area.

Road gullies belong to Derbyshire County Council, or to Derby City Council inside the city.

Still Have Questions About Your Drains?

Our engineers are happy to talk you through the problem, the likely fix and the price before you book — no obligation.

Severn Trent (0800 783 4444) in Derby and most of the county; Yorkshire Water (0345 1 24 24 24) in Chesterfield, Staveley, Bolsover and Dronfield; a mix of the two in Clay Cross; and United Utilities in Glossop. If you're not sure which applies to your street, our engineer can tell you on site.

Derbyshire County Council is the highway authority for the county — see its flooding, drainage and gullies page. Inside Derby it's Derby City Council.

Long Eaton is in Derbyshire (Erewash borough), even though it has a Nottingham NG10 postcode. Its sewers are Severn Trent's and its road gullies are Derbyshire County Council's.

We cover Matlock and the Derwent Valley towns such as Belper. Buxton, Glossop and the High Peak are outside our regular area because of the travel time from Southwell.

No. There's no call-out fee in Derbyshire or anywhere else we cover, and prices are the same as in Nottingham — quoted plus VAT and agreed before we start.
