On 29 April 2023 a short, intense storm (14.2 mm of rain in 15 minutes at the Newstead Abbey gauge) flooded seven homes and a business on Main Road, Southview Gardens, Rigg Lane and Haddon Road. Nottinghamshire County Council found that some Main Road properties sit below the road, so water running along it flowed into them.
When highway crews cleared the drains after the flood, they found the Main Road gullies generally full or blocked, and the Swinton Rise gullies running to old soakaways that no longer worked. Soakaways on private land silt up in the same way, so if yours is slow to empty after rain, it may need clearing or rebuilding.
