Lenton takes its name from the River Leen. After heavy flooding in 1960 the river was diverted under the Nottingham Canal through a syphon and into a new channel to the Trent, and stretches of it still run in culverts under roads and buildings.
Nottingham City Council's flood risk assessment counts about 35 Severn Trent sewer outfalls on one bank of the Leen and 31 on the other within the city. When the river is high those outlets can't discharge freely, so drains on low ground near the Leen can back up in heavy rain even when they're clear.
Lenton is largely residential and popular with University of Nottingham students, many of whom live in rows of terraced housing.
