Hyson Green became part of Nottingham in 1877, and by 1912 it was a grid of densely packed small terraced houses. On streets like these a rear drain often serves several houses before it reaches the sewer, and since 1 October 2011 a blockage in that shared length has normally been Severn Trent's to clear.
The area was built on the southern part of the Basford and Nottingham Lings, once a large sandy waste of gorse, ling and heather. Sandy ground drains freely, which helps soakaways, but it also means a leaking pipe can quietly wash soil away from under a yard.
The Hyson Green Flats, built in 1965, were demolished in 1988, and the site was reused for an Asda superstore and low-rise housing. The area now mixes older terraces with much newer homes and drains.
