Colwick sits in the defended Trent floodplain, and two mostly culverted watercourses run through it to the river via flap valves. During Storm Henk in January 2024 the high Trent stopped them discharging, and 16 homes (15 of them on Vale Road) and five businesses on Churchill Business Park flooded inside, Nottinghamshire County Council found.
Some residents saw water come up through their floorboards, a sign of groundwater. Colwick is at the eastern end of the Nottingham Left Bank defences, where about 2.5km of embankments and flood walls were raised and strengthened as part of the £45 million scheme completed in 2012.
Since the mid-1980s, new housing has been built on land once used by Colwick's industrial estate, according to Gedling Borough Council. The racecourse and Colwick Country Park lie just west of the village, and the country park, Colwick Hall and Colwick Woods are inside the Nottingham City boundary.
