Sewer Connections

New connections come up on plot developments, barn and garage conversions, properties coming off a septic tank, and extensions where the existing drain cannot take any more. They are also needed when a private drain has to be re-routed away from a building line.

You have a right to connect to a public sewer, but not without telling the sewerage undertaker first. In our area that is Severn Trent across most of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, Anglian Water across most of Lincolnshire, and Yorkshire Water around Chesterfield. They will want to know where you are connecting, what the flows are and how the work will be done.

If the connection is made in an adopted road or footpath, the highway authority has to license the opening and agree the traffic management. We will tell you which consents your job needs before you commit to anything.

Most connections are made into an existing manhole where one is available, which is the tidiest option and the easiest to inspect. Where there is no chamber in a usable position, a new one is built, or a connection is cut into the sewer itself with a proprietary saddle.

Pipework is laid to the right fall and bedded correctly, the connection is tested, and the excavation is backfilled and reinstated to the standard the highway authority or your driveway requires.
