How Much Does Drain Unblocking Cost in 2026?

Most UK drain unblocking jobs cost around £85 to £120 in normal hours. Our unblocking starts from £95 + VAT with no call-out fee. Here's what affects it.

Most drain unblocking jobs in the UK cost around £85 to £120 during normal working hours, according to 2026 price guides. Simple rodding can be cheaper, while high-pressure jetting, emergency call-outs and camera surveys cost more. Urgent Drainage Solutions starts from £95 + VAT, with no call-out fee and the price agreed before any work begins.

Below are typical market ranges with their sources, what pushes a price up or down, and how to avoid a nasty surprise on the bill.

What are typical drain unblocking prices in 2026?

These figures come from national price guides. They are typical market ranges, not quotes, and the guides don't always say whether VAT is included.

JobTypical rangeSource
Standard daytime unblock£80 to £120MyBuilder, 21 August 2026
Drain rodding£75 to £150 (average £85)Checkatrade, June 2026
High-pressure jetting£120 to £250Checkatrade, June 2026

Blocked toilet£50 to £60MyJobQuote, 2 September 2026
Average job (1 to 2 hours)£100MyJobQuote, 2 September 2026
Nationwide average£120Bark

The guides also show how call-out charges vary. Checkatrade gives an average call-out fee of £60, and MyJobQuote says a £50 to £100 call-out charge "usually covers the first hour". Some companies, including us, don't charge a call-out fee at all, so compare the total price rather than the headline rate.

How much does emergency drain unblocking cost?

Expect to pay more outside normal hours. The same guides give:

  • Checkatrade: an average emergency call-out of about £180 on top of the job;
  • MyJobQuote: £100 to £200 extra for evenings and weekends;
  • MyBuilder: an emergency call-out of £100 to £180.

What counts as "out of hours" differs between companies, so ask. Our engineers work 7 days a week from 6am to 8pm, and we offer emergency call-outs 365 days a year. If your drain is overflowing now, see our emergency drainage page for what to do while you wait.

What do we charge?

Our current headline prices:

  • Drain unblocking: from £95 + VAT (£114 including VAT at 20%).
  • CCTV drain survey: from £120 + VAT for up to 100 m of accessible runs, with a written report.
  • Call-out fee: none. You pay for the work, not for us turning up.

The price is agreed before we start. If we find something that changes the job, such as a broken pipe rather than a simple blockage, we stop and explain the options and the new price before doing anything else. Unblocking is priced as a one-off visit, and any jetting, camera work or repair is explained and priced separately so you can decide what you need. Full details are on our prices page.

What affects the cost of unblocking a drain?

The biggest factors are:

  • Where the blockage is. A blocked sink trap is quicker to clear than a blockage deep in the main drain under the garden.
  • Access. Easy-to-lift inspection chambers speed things up. Hidden, buried or sealed chambers add time.
  • The method needed. Hand rods clear many simple blockages. Grease, scale, silt and roots usually need high-pressure drain jetting, which uses more equipment.
  • What caused it. Wet wipes and sanitary items can form tough blockages. Fat hardens along the pipe and may need jetting to clear properly.
  • Whether a camera is needed. If a drain keeps blocking, a CCTV inspection shows whether there is a crack, displaced joint or root ingress behind it.
  • Time and day. Evening, weekend and bank holiday work often costs more.
  • Whether there is damage. A broken or collapsed pipe needs a repair, which is priced separately from unblocking.

When unblocking turns into a repair

If a camera shows structural damage, the job changes. National guides put patch repairs at roughly £200 to £1,200, drain relining at around £80 to £150 per metre, and excavation at about £300 to £650 per metre. Our guide to drain relining vs excavation explains the options, and our signs of a blocked or collapsed drain guide helps you spot damage early.

Is it the water company's job instead?

Before paying anyone, check who is responsible. In England, you are responsible for drains that serve only your property and sit inside your boundary. Pipes shared with neighbours and pipes beyond your boundary have been the water company's responsibility since 1 October 2011. Severn Trent, the sewerage company across Nottinghamshire and most of Derbyshire and Leicestershire, says that if neighbours are affected too, the problem is likely to be in the public sewer. Its 24-hour number for sewer blockages is 0800 783 4444.

Our guide to who is responsible for blocked drains explains this in detail. If we find the blockage is in the public sewer, we'll tell you.

How can I avoid being overcharged?

A few simple checks protect you:

  1. Ask for the total price before anyone sets off, including any call-out, emergency or per-hour charges and whether VAT is included.
  2. Be wary of very low phone quotes that rise sharply once the engineer arrives. A clear "from" price with an explanation of what changes it is more honest.
  3. Ask what method will be used and why. Jetting costs more than rodding, so it should be justified.
  4. Ask to see the problem. A good engineer will show you the blockage, the chamber or the camera footage.
  5. Don't agree to repairs without evidence. Expensive work should be backed by CCTV images and a written quote.
  6. Check the reviews. Look for recent, detailed reviews from people in your area.

Can I unblock a drain myself?

Sometimes. A plunger, a sink trap clean or a set of drain rods can clear simple blockages in a sink or an accessible gully. Wear gloves, never mix chemical drain cleaners, and don't lift heavy manhole covers. If the blockage doesn't shift quickly, or water is backing up into the house, stop and call a professional before the problem spreads.

When to call a professional

Call a drainage engineer if a DIY attempt hasn't worked, if several fittings are blocked at once, if waste is backing up, or if the drain keeps blocking. Urgent Drainage Solutions clears blocked drains across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire from £95 + VAT, with no call-out fee and the price agreed first. Unblocking is a one-off service, because a drain can block again if wipes or fat go down it. Repairs such as lining, patching and pipe replacement come with a 12-month guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

National price guides put a standard daytime drain unblocking at roughly £80 to £120, with simple rodding from about £75 and high-pressure jetting £120 to £250. Urgent Drainage Solutions starts from £95 + VAT with no call-out fee, and the price is agreed before work starts.

Usually. Price guides show out-of-hours or emergency attendance adding roughly £100 to £200 to the bill, depending on the company, the time and the day. Always ask for the full price, including any emergency or out-of-hours charge, before an engineer sets off.

Yes, typically. Checkatrade's 2026 guide puts rodding at £75 to £150 and jetting at £120 to £250, because jetting uses a powered water jetter and clears the full bore of the pipe. Rodding suits simple blockages; jetting is better for grease, silt and roots.

Not always. Many trade prices are quoted plus VAT, and national price guides don't always say whether their figures include it. Our prices are quoted plus VAT, so a £95 + VAT job costs £114 including VAT at 20%. Check before you compare quotes.
